LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx is in town checking out the work being done to build the two new Ohio River bridges.
It's one of the biggest construction projects in the country and Foxx is in the middle of a tour to show just how important it is to invest in projects like this.
It's the second stop of an eight state bus tour as Foxx pushes for Congress to address what he says is an urgent need to invest in transportation projects.
As it stands now, Foxx says the nation's surface transportation programs are set to expire and the Highway Trust Fund is running out of money.
“As early as August of this year, the fund that repays us for building roads and repairing this country's highways will essentially run dry,” Foxx said.
Foxx said Congress has had a "band-aid" approach to the transportation budget; funding it in fits and starts.
As a result he said it's difficult for local communities to plan their projects.
