LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- After Louisville police charged a man with the murder of his girlfriend's two year-old, WHAS11 spoke with the toddler’s grandmother.
Mona Thomas’ son, Alonzo Thomas, is the little boy’s father. Thomas said she noticed bruises and scratches on the child the last time she saw him. “I noticed that he did have some bruises on his chest. I did notice that,” Thomas said.
Thomas describes her grandson as a handsome bright-eyed little boy. “He was going to grow up to be a very nice little boy,” she said.
Thomas Jr. was taken to the hospital on Tuesday with multiple blunt force trauma injuries and severe burns.
Police arrested 25-year-old Lajuan D. Hayes. According to Thomas, her son and Hayes got into a heated exchange over Instagram recently. She said that’s when she warned her son to stay away from Hayes. “I had my inklings that something was going on," she said. "I told Alonzo, 'Leave him alone, something is not right about him.’”
Police said Hayes was watching the boy while his mother worked and was the only person around the child when the injuries occurred.
Hayes appeared in court on Thursday to answer to an outstanding warrant for a robbery charge. He is expected to be arraigned on the murder charges on Friday.
Two-year-old Alonzo Thomas Jr. died Tuesday night at Kosiar Children's Hospital.
Friends said they have set up an account on gofundme.com to help pay for Alonzo's funeral.
