LOUISVILLE, KY. (WHAS11) - Five months after the primary, former mayoral candidate Chris Thieneman endorsed fellow Republican Hal Heiner on Oct. 25.

Thieneman says the recent endorsement controversy in Democrat Greg Fischer's campaign prompted him to come forward now.

After Fischer was accused of trading "significant input" into his campaign in exchange for the endorsement of Independent candidate Jackie Green, Fischer accused Hal Heiner of doing the same thing for the endorsement of former Democratic candidate Tyler Allen.  Heiner and Allen categorically denied the allegation.

Now, Thieneman says he knows that Heiner would not trade influence in his government for an endorsement, because Thieneman says Heiner refused to bargain for Thieneman's endorsement when they met four months ago.

Thieneman says he sought a position in Heiner's administration, but that Heiner immediately rejected the offer and explained that it would not be ethical and would be inconsistent with his call for an open, transparent government.

"My respect for Hal grew," Thieneman said.

Hear from Thieneman tonight at 5 p.m. on WHAS11 News.
