BARDSTOWN, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The Bardstown Rotary Club is on a mission to collect hundreds of shoes for needy children, but that dream was crushed after a thief took the pairs already collected.

“As you can see it's just tattered boxes on the floor. We were just left behind to clean up the mess," Tracina Jones, Bardstown Rotary Club president-elect, said.

This storage locker on US 62 in Bardstown was once filled with hundreds of brand new athletic shoes that were ready to be passed out to needy children in Nelson County and shipped abroad to children overseas. On Monday, Oct. 28, every pair of those shoes were stolen by a thief.

"It was very disheartening. One of the things we pride ourselves in is service above self and helping others," Jones said.

A member of the Bardstown Rotary Club made the horrible discovery when she was on her way to drop off more shoes. The club was part of statewide effort to collect shoes. The goal was in sight until a thief ripped off the lock and took 200 pairs.

The big question is why? Why in the world would someone break into a storage locker and steal 200 pairs of shoes? That's what the Nelson County Sheriff's Department is trying to figure out.

But members said they aren't deterred and  they've set a new goal.

"I am looking forward to our club and our community banding together to overcome this tragedy," Jones said.
