LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Louisville International Airport is one of 100 airports across the country to change its screening procedures for some passengers. If you’re one of those lucky travelers, getting through the security check point just got a whole lot easier.

Frequent fliers often feel like they spend a huge chunk of their lives in airports, waiting for baggage, standing in lines and going through security.

“Someone who travels as much as I do through the airports, it really takes a lot of excessive time getting in and out,” said Jim Fowler, who travels 2 to 3 weeks out of every month for work.

Since 9/11, security has become a detailed process. The shoes come off, jackets off, and laptops and liquids must come out of the bag. Now, the TSA is expanding its Pre-Check program to help speed things up a bit.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful, without having to go through all the motions that we’re used to,” said Christy Frederick, who was allowed to try the pre-check process on her latest flight. “It’s just faster and easier and it’s just a great way to travel.”

TSA spokesman Mark Howell said passenger won’t need to “take off their shoes, they’re not going to have to take off their jackets, light outerwear, as well as their belts.”

Travelers will be able to enroll through the frequent flier program with their preferred airline.

“If you fly a lot on one of the carriers that participate in Pre-Check, sometimes they’ll invite you,” Howell said. “They’ll send you an email, you’re automatically enrolled in the program.”

Later this year, the TSA will initiate its own program, independent of any one airline. It willl require a background check, fingerprinting, an interview and $85.

“Really, for the price, it is so worth not having to do everything like we’re used to,” said Frederick.

Fowler agreed, she said she is ready for “anything to save me some time going through these airports.”

Starting December 20th, all service members will get free entry into the TSA Pre-Check program. Good news for those at Fort Knox and Fort Campbell traveling through Louisville for the holidays.
