LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Kanubhai Patel has worked at the Kopp Lane Food Mart for more than 7 years.

He works 7 days a week to provide for his family, and tonight he says he feels an overwhelming sense of relief after the man who shot at him and tried to rob him on December 30th is behind bars and so is his accomplice.

Patel says everyday that passed without the suspects’ arrests made him and his family uneasy.

“My wife called me all the time, ‘hey close early. Close early. Close early’,” Patel said.

Louisville Metro Police arrested 22 year-old Troy Gaines Jr. and 33 year-old Shawndrell Robinson early Saturday morning while the pair tried to rob a Speedway gas station on the 8300 block of Preston Highway.

According to LMPD, the two are believed to be responsible for 23 armed robberies in the Louisville Metro area alone and robberies in several other cities. Police say a gun was fired in three of the robberies including the one at Kopp Lane Food Mart.

Gaines and Robinson are both no strangers to the law.  Gaines spent time behind bars for violating several emergency protective orders, and Robinson’s criminal past includes assault and rape charges. According to Louisville Metro Jail records, neither had ever been arrested for robbery until Saturday morning.

Both men are also suspected to face more charges. The two are suspected of robberies in Radcliff and Jeffersonville.
