(WHAS11) -- Spencer County High School phones rang almost nonstop Wednesday morning as parents learned two students had a gun on campus the day before.  Investigators tell WHAS11 News a 16-year-old brought a small caliber hand gun to campus Tuesday and gave it to his 15-year-old friend. The school's principal says the 15-year-old showed it to a classmate.  That classmate went home and told her father what she'd seen.  The parent called the sheriff's office at about 4 p.m. Tuesday. Sheriff’s investigators did question one of the students allegedly involved, however they didn’t get much information Tuesday.

The parent who made the report to law enforcement then called the principal of Spencer County High School Wednesday morning.  It was the first time Principal Curt Haun had heard of the incident.  He called the Taylorsville Police Department.  Taylorsville Police soon learned the Sheriff’s Office had been working the case since Tuesday. Wednesday investigators arrested two students at Spencer County High School.  They determined that a gun had in fact been brought to school Tuesday and taken off campus.  It appears the gun was never used to threaten anyone one and wasn’t loaded.  Investigators found the gun Wednesday at a building off campus.

Both boys are now charged with possession of a firearm on school property.  The 16-year-old is also charged with stealing a firearm and the 15-year-old with receiving a stolen firearm. They were in juvenile detention as of Wednesday afternoon.
