(WHAS11) - Darlene Armes and her husband spend every evening carting around cannons in La Grange.

“This is all volunteer to get rid of the birds,” said Armes.

Thousands of birds, mostly Starlings, have been roosting in a section of trees along Jericho Road since November.

“Oh, it’s been awful!” said Armes.

Residents are in luck. The cannons appear to be working. Mayor Bill Lammlein said the birds are almost all gone.

“I understand if you annoy them enough, they give up the roost and move on,” said Lammlein.

Lammlein said he received several emails from people from around the country who offered solutions to get rid of the birds.

“Today we've fielded three or four phone calls, and people have these ideas that range from the ridiculous to the ridiculous," said Lammlein.

Armes said she borrowed the cannons from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

“With us having four cannons going, we're hoping that’s what’s scaring them and they're moving on down the road a little bit," said Armes.

Lammlein said they expect the birds to return next fall, but they will use the cannons much earlier to scare them off.
