EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) -- A fire investigator says a blaze that killed an 80-year-old Evansville woman was likely caused by her smoking a cigarette while using an oxygen tank.
Fire Investigator Jesse Storey says the fire was mostly limited to the family room where Mary Edith Welch slept.
Firefighters arrived at the home about 6 a.m. Sunday just after Welch's daughter and 18-year-old grandson got out of the house. The Evansville Courier & Press reports a coroner's report found Welch died of smoke inhalation.
Susie Hanson told the newspaper her mother had moved back to Evansville from South Carolina after developing heart trouble and lung cancer. Hanson and her son were helping care for Welch.
