LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- University of Louisville guard Russ Smith has been honored with a 2013 Academic Momentum Award, as presented by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and the Scholar Baller program.
Smith is one of 63 male and female student-athletes nationally representing 15 different sports to receive the honor, which is based on the level of academic improvement and the impact of that academic momentum. A junior communication major from Brooklyn, N.Y., Smith has a cumulative 3.1 grade point average and was a third team selection for the academic honor.
Smith is the top scorer for the Cardinals, scoring 20 or more points on 10 occasions this season. In BIG EAST statistics, he is fourth in scoring (18.4, 38th nationally), third in steals (2.2, 31st nationally), 12th in free throw percentage (.797) and 14th in three-point goals per game (1.7). He was earlier named to the Wooden Award Midseason Top 25 and was the fifth-highest vote-getter on a Jan. 10 ESPN.com poll of player of the year candidates at mid-season.
