LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Driving down I-64 in Shelby County, you’ll notice the Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville is beginning to take shape.
Local residents in the area say it looks as if Churchill Downs has moved to the suburbs.
The outlet mall has created a modern-day version of the famed Twin Spires which turn 140 years old this year.
Churchull Downs has a reputation of being fiercely protective of its logos and icons.
Churchill Downs Vice President John Asher gave his thoughts on the ode to the Spires.
"Churchill Downs has taken note that significant portions of the design of the project seem to have been inspired by our iconic Twin Spires. The development is not affiliated with Churchill Downs in any way, but we wish the developers the best on their project and hope that it realizes their economic development goals for our region,” Asher said. “If patrons and passersby think well of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby as the development moves forward, that's a bonus."
The outlet mall is expected to open in July.
