(WHAS11) – A young father is dead after he was shot multiple times around midnight on Christmas morning.

20 year-old Charles Fambrough’s mother says he was walking his younger sister to her home on Portland Avenue when he never returned. Barbara Fambrough says she begged Charles and his sister to stay home, but he kissed her on the cheek and went out the door.

“I just can’t get my head around that I’m not going to see him anymore,” BarbaraFambrough said.

One woman who did not want to be identified said she heard gunshots on the 2400 block of Portland Avenue around midnight and heard screams and rushed to help.

“I was trying to ask him his name…trying to keep his mind off of what was happening around him,” the unidentified person said.

Fambrough says she went looking for Charles when he hadn’t returned home after several hours. That’s when she saw police and crime scene tape blocking Portland Avenue.

She had this to say to his killer, “You killed his spirit…my life. You took a big hunk of my life.”
Fambrough says Charles has a 1-year-old son and was getting ready to start a job at UPS.  She says Charles liked to joke around and play basketball.

Charles was taken to University Hospital where he died in surgery. Charles graduated from Shawnee High School in 2011 and was classmates with 20-year-old Dante Newsome. Newsome was shot and killed Monday afternoon on West Market Street.

No suspects have been identified.

This is the third fatal shooting in three days. On Sunday, police in Shively rushed to the scene of a shooting in a parking lot in the 4000 block of Dixie Highway. Police found 19-year-old Kenneth Forbes Jr. shot and killed when they arrived.
