LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Police responded to a 911 call at the Millwood Apartment Complex in the 600 block of Huntington Park Drive around 4:30am Friday morning after the residents inside said a man forced his way into their apartment.

Those residents were able to escape. According to police, the suspect was very agitated when they arrived.

“Officers set up a perimeter at that time and began to make contact with the subject who came very aggressively waving a weapon at the officer and threatening them with that weapon,” said LMPD spokeswoman Carey Klain.

One man who did not want to be identified said he heard multiple guns shots and the noise actually woke him up.

“I just heard rapid gunfire; 4 or 5 shots,” the resident said he heard a lot of commotion and he looked outside to see multiple police cars surrounding the apartment. “I came outside and I heard a police officer, ‘ he’s got a gun! He’s got a gun”

It’s unclear how many officers opened fire, but crime scene technicians marked at least 16 shell casings at the scene. Bullets shattered windows, cars and even went into the neighboring apartment building.

The suspect was taken to University Hospital and is being treated for what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.

Police said  the couple told them they had never met the man before Friday morning.

The suspect has not yet been identified.
