SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – An overnight fire destroys a storage facility in Shelbyville, Kentucky containing personal belongings such as furniture and antique cars.

Ricky Cox lives right across the street from the storage facility on Longview Drive.

He first saw smoke just after 11 p.m. coming from the building but to him, things got worse.

“But within 45 minutes there were literally flames shooting 30-feet into the air. Once it got engulfed, it really was a roaring fire,” Cox said.

The building was destroyed along with many of the things that were inside.

Firefighters lined the street in front of Cox’s home where he has lived for more than 25 years.

“There were two or three pumper trucks, ladders extended, firemen fighting the fire [and] flashing lights. It looked like daytime out here,” he said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to only the building.

“That building has a lot of wood interior. The outer structure is concrete blocks so I think that helped contain it. It looks like it’s a complete loss,” Cox added.

In the end, much was destroyed but no lives were lost in the cold December night.
