LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Academy@Shawnee (formerly Shawnee High School) alumni came together Friday evening to show support to one of their former students during a field dedication ceremony.
The Academy@Shawnee football field, which is located behind the school at 41st and Herman Streets, will now be known as the Daniel C. Lawson field.
Lawson was a great athlete at Shawnee in the ‘50s and went on to play football for Oklahoma State and then the Washington Redskins in the ‘60s.
His sister, Sandra Lawson Taylor, attended the dedication and says it was an honor and privilege to know her brother’s talent was being acknowledged.
“It’s an emotional experience, but such a gratifying experience because this is a real tribute to my brother and I think to the Louisville community,” she said.
Lawson only played for the Redskins for one year before being injured. He passed away last year.
