LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A settlement between the University of Louisville Hospital and the federal government has been reached.

It ends allegations that the hospital submitted false Medicare billing claims between January 2006 and December 2010.

U of L Hospital operates a unit within the emergency department to address non-urgent care issues.

The unit FirstCare, is staffed by physician assistants and nurse practitioners who are employed by University Medical Center but is run under the direction of the Department of Emergency Medicine Physicians.

According to the settlement, both parties claimed cost reports with Medicare.

UMC disclosed in 2011 to federal prosecutors that it may have violated federal law.

The settlement’s cost is estimated at $2.8 million.
