(WHAS11)—The father of UofL basketball star Russ Smith has hired attorneys after FedEx lost his son’s National Championship jersey.

Smith’s father told WHAS11 that he believes the jersey was stolen.

Smith was given the jersey in a frame during Senior Night at the KFC Yum! Center. His father was standing with him on the court.

Smith’s father, known as Big Russ, had the framed jersey shipped to his barber shop in New York, but upon arrival it was found to be broken. FexEd told him to ship it back to Louisville.

FedEx said the jersey was thrown away by them, because their policy is to discard damaged items with broken glass.

Smith's father said he hopes by hiring an attorney it will speed along the effort to find the jersey or, if not, hopes it will help them come to a settlement that makes everyone happy.

FedEx did not comment on the situation tonight.

A signed Russ Smith jersey sold for $500 on Saturday for a fundraiser for the Portland Promise Center.
