LOUIISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)—A local man got to celebrate a big promotion at his favorite spot locally.

Commander Gerald Nauert was promoted on Wednesday to Captain outside of the Louisville Slugger Museum.

He is a longtime baseball fan and a family friend of the Hillerich Family, who started the factory and made bats for generations.

His promotion took place in front of the world’s largest baseball bat.

Nauert is a retired state police captain and a 25 year veteran of the Coast Guard.

“I asked Bobby Hillerich if I could stand in front of the bat and be sworn in and read two pieces of paper and it’s like wow, I’m amazed. I’m humbled,” Nauert said.

He asked that his promotion be close to Independence Day and at his favorite spot.
