LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- If you are wondering what to do with your Christmas tree now that the holiday has passed the city of Louisville is encouraging you to recycle it.

You can take the tree to one of three tree-cycling centers around town where it will be turned into mulch free of charge.

For every five trees recycled about 35 pounds of mulch is created to help new plant and tree growth.

The tree-cycling centers are open through Saturday December 29 and again January 3-5. They are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You can bring your tree to East District, 595 N. Hubbards Lane, Southwest Government Center, 7219 Dixie Highway or the Waste Reduction Center at 636 Meriwether Avenue (Tree drop-off only. Mulch not available at this location.)

Note: Christmas tree vendors can recycle their unsold trees only on Thursday, December 27 at the Hubbards Lane location.
