A Louisville man driving one of Toyota’s recalled trucks says he couldn't stop causing a three car crash that sent six to the hospital.
It happened the day Toyota announced it had a fix and soon would be repairing vehicles with the sticky gas pedal problem.
Rhonda Muehl says she was stopped in front her house on Terry Road waiting for traffic to slow down so she could make a left turn into her driveway.
Muehl said, “I heard the tires squealing like someone trying to stop.” Seconds later, Muehl says a truck crashed into her, pushing her car into on-coming traffic.
“Pushed me into this lane then I hit a Ford Explorer and me and Ford landed in my front yard. It hit me so hard it busted out the back window.”
Muehl says she immediately went over to Scott Tarter, the driver of the truck who hit her.
“He said the gas pedal stuck, the gas pedal stuck.”
Tarter was driving this 2007 Toyota Tundra, one of the vehicles re-called for possibly having a gas pedal that sticks.
Tarter told us and police that he tried to stop but couldn't.
Six people were taken to the hospital, 4 people from the third car that was hit and both Muehl and Tarter say they suffered some injuries.
Tarter said, “I could have killed people and lose my home and my whole life over. I could of killed somebody.”
Tarter says he had called Toyota before the crash but at point there was no fix.
“They had not come up a repair they said the engineers were working day and night to come up with a repair.”
Toyota started making those repairs a few days after the crash. Tarter says right now he's in the dark. He doesn't know if Toyota is going to help and right now he's worried if his auto insurance is going to stand behind his claim.
Tarter says his insurance company is investigating the accident.
