(WHAS11) -- Senator-elect Rand Paul has made the first hire for his Washington office and it won't make labor unions happy.

Paul has named the vice president of the national right to work legal defense foundation, Doug Stafford, as his chief of staff.

While the nonprofit group contends that Americans have the right to join a union, it also says that none should ever be forced to affiliate with a union in order to get or keep a job.

Stafford also has ties to the Campaign for Liberty, the constitutional conservative organization founded by Paul’s father, Texas congressman Ron Paul.
