(WHAS11) -- The number of homes targeted by an arsonist is going up.

WHAS11 News has learned that as many as five homes were targeted in a string of overnight fires that started within minutes of each other in the Buechel neighborhood.

Metro police and fire are cruising through this part of Buechel just to reassure residents. In less than 24 hours fires have started at five homes in this quiet neighborhood.

Neighbors are on edge and police are patrolling the streets. Fire investigators say this looks to be the work of an arsonist. The first fire starts in a carport on Rosemount then engulfs the house. A neighbor rushed over to get the resident out.

Thirty minutes later, firefighters find two more fires on the same street called Glenmeade. Someone had set a wreath on fire at one home but the fire did not spread luckily.

For neighbors it's overwhelming.

Now fire officials are looking into whether this string of fires is connected to porch fires in the same area in 2012.

Authorities are offering a $1,000 reward for any tips to metro arson unit 1-800 –27—ARSON.
