LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A violent assault inside a home in south Louisville is the reason police said two people were sent to University of Louisville Hospital early Wednesday morning.

Police said a man broke inside a house on the 6600 block of Strawberry Lane where he attacked a woman with her young child inside the home during the assault. Police did not release all the details, but said the baby’s mother knew her alleged attacker, who was also injured.

“I’m not sure what exactly his injuries are,” Dwight Mitchell, a Metro police spokesperson, said. “But, they are severe enough it could cost him his life.”

Police said the man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and the mother was taken in stable condition. They say the infant appeared to be uninjured, but was taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital for evaluation.

Metro police had about seven detectives on scene throughout the morning.

Neighbors said they have seen signs of problems in the past at the same home.

“I see them out here arguing and fighting,” Larry Caldwell, who lives across the street from the crime scene, said. “I see a lot of cars coming in and out [from the driveway].”

Police said it is too early in the investigation to issue any charges while the two parties are both in the hospital.
