LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- For much of Thursday morning, April 3, a house on Rubel Avenue looked no different than any other but it turns out the elevated porch was blocking the view of discarded groceries, a bullet hole in the window, blood splatter and a dead body in the doorway.
It wasn't until about 9:30 a.m., when Zan Hoffman, who asked us not to show his face, made the discovery.
“I literally thought someone drunk was passed out against my door when I saw someone up against my door this morning,” Hoffman said.

But instead it was one of Hoffman’s two roommates, Dennis Scoles. Someone he'd seen just the night before.
“He was a charming person who every time he left to go somewhere would ask if he could get something for you,” Hoffman said.
A third roommate said the victim was last seen at about 1:30 a.m., socializing with friends at their home. After the gathering the victim went out for groceries and made it back to the front door, but no further.
“I think I heard his last screams; I heard the gunshots and yelling,” Hoffman said.
According to neighbors, those screams and shots came at about 2:30 a.m. but they didn't come outside to check, because commotion from the bar across the street is common.
Police haven’t released a motive for the shooting or said whether anything was taken from the victim. Scoles roommates said he was kind and can’t imagine anyone would want to hurt him in particular.
