LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- A New Albany man was arrested and accused of being the ring-leader of a gift card scam worth nearly $33,000.
Police said Jon Speedy, 52, allegedly stole merchandise from Home Depot, then he would return the stolen goods in exchange for gift cards that he would later sell for cash.
Investigators said he would commit the crimes to fund a heroin addiction. He admitted to detectives he was involved in the scam and implicated at least two more accomplices.
The arrest is related to a September story WHAS11 covered that detailed hundreds of people that were involved in similar scams. The Commonwealth Attorney’s office said that nearly 70 arrests were made in September due to the scams.
Speedy has been banned from all Home Depot locations.
