LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Three people accused of killing a Louisville mother and son are expected have entered into a plea agreement. In this case a fight on a basketball court ended with the murder of a mother and son. Three people charged in those murders were set to go on trial Monday but they entered last minute plea deals.

Dianna Wood, a disabled woman, was shot to death in her own home. Her older son Steve Wood Junior was also shot and killed. Her younger son Steveonte Wood witnessed it all. He was the intended target and he was the one who got into the fight on the basketball court.

Three people were charged with the crime.  Laquita Townsend’s son got into a fight with Steveonte on the basketball court. The mom was accused of going to the Wood home to confront Steveonte and was accused of bringing two other men, Marcus Greene and Zachery Kilgore along with her.

Kilgore and Greene were also charged with the murders.

“There were some facts that could have been fairly unfavorable to the commonwealth that have come out in the last 10 days and so it was something that encouraged us to reopen communications,” said Alice Jones, assistant Commonweath’s Attorney. “We had been approached several times so in the interest of justice we thought this was the best way to go.”

Witness statements changed and prosecutors thought it best to strike a deal with the defendants.
Kilgore would get 5 years and Greene would get 20 years.
Greene may only have to serve a fraction of that time.

And instead of facing the death penalty, the mom, Townsend is home with her kids.

“Laquita had a case in which the prosecutors were seeking to execute her and she plead to misdemeanors that will result in her being home with her children tonight,” said Kenyon Meyer, Townsend’s attorney. “So, I think it was a pretty reasonable business decision on her part.”
