Leitchfield, Ky. (WHAS11) - A small, experimental type plane crashed into a motel near Rough River in the 13000 block of Falls of Rough Road around 1:45 p.m. Friday afternoon, leaving one person dead.
The pilot, 61-year-old Lyle R. Moss of Louisville, died on impact.
The owner of the motel was pulled out of the building by a 15-year-old boy before the fire injured her. She apparently heard the sounds of the plane and sat up in bed and started to move to leave the unit before the impact. That was when the boy came in and carried her out.
The hotel, the Pine Tree Inn, was reportedly hit on the corner of the building. A fire that was started from that crash has been extinguished.
An airshow was scheduled in the area - the Rough River Canard Fly-in - and officials were expecting several dozen planes to show for that. A sheriff told WHAS11 that they believe the plane was one that was expected to be a part of the show.
The airport, across the street from the motel is a small airport with no control tower; but there haven't been any reports yet as to whether the pilot of the plane had tried to communicate with anyone at the airport before the crash.
Witnesses say they heard the plane's engine sputter, saw the wings bank and saw the plane hit the tops of some trees just before hitting the motel. They also say they saw Moss attempt to get back to the runway before he crashed.
The FAA believes that the crash was caused by an equipment malfunction but it is still under investigation.
