Louisville, KY. (PRESS RELEASE) -- What’s in a name? For 86-year-old Mary Fischer of Louisville it’s bragging rights and VIP treatment for the 57th annual Republic Bank Pegasus Parade on May 3. Ms. Fischer submitted the winning entry – “Peggy Bank” – in a contest sponsored by Republic Bank to rename the large inflatable balloon that annually leads the parade down Broadway. Previously known as “Absolutely Pegasus,” the balloon is shaped in the form of Pegasus, the legendary winged horse of Greek mythology and longtime symbol of the Kentucky Derby Festival.
“We received a lot of clever entries for the renaming contest, but the judges thought ‘Peggy Bank’ was a perfect fit,” Steve Trager, President and CEO of Republic Bank, said.” Mary Fischer can be proud that her contest submission was the winner and the name she bestowed on the Pegasus balloon will be used for the foreseeable future. We hope this year’s Republic Bank Pegasus Parade will be especially memorable for Mary and her family.”
“Republic Bank has been title sponsor of the Pegasus Parade – the Kentucky Derby Festival’s oldest event – since 2002,” Kentucky Derby Festival President and CEO Mike Berry said. “The parade continues to showcase exciting floats, inflatables, equestrian units, marching bands and specialty units to a live TV audience and more than 200,000 spectators. Thanks to the support of Republic Bank, this year’s Pegasus Parade promises to be one of the best ever.”
Mary Fischer will be introduced at the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade Preview Party on May 1 at the Kentucky Exposition Center and will ride in a convertible in this year’s parade. She will also receive tickets in the review stands for the event. Tickets for the Parade are currently on sale online at www.kdf.org or by calling the Kentucky Derby Festival at (502).584-FEST. Ticket prices are $9 for bleacher seats; $11 chair seating and $26 review stand seats.
The new name for the Pegasus balloon was announced Monday at the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade Position Draw at The Green Building, 732 East Market St. The 2012 float and inflatable sponsors drew for positions in the parade at Monday’s event. As was previously announced, the theme of the 2012 Republic Bank Pegasus Parade is “Family, Fun and Games.” The parade theme will be used by sponsoring companies to help direct the building of floats and costuming of the inflatable handlers and crew. The floats compete for various awards based on originality, eye appeal, theme representation, animation, attention to detail and enthusiasm. Marching bands use the theme to help with musical selection and it is the basis of costume and concept design for the other marching units.
The following companies drew for their float position in the parade at Monday’s event, as well as the sponsors of the eight participating inflatable character balloons:
CenterStage at the Jewish Community Center
City of St. Matthews
Grand Lodge of Kentucky
Hwang’s Martial Arts
Kentuckiana Pride Festival
Kosair Charities/Kosair Shriners
The Fillies, Inc.
The parade will feature inflatable balloons sponsored by the following companies: AAA, Chick-fil-A of Kentuckiana, Horseshoe Southern Indiana, Jefferson Community & Technical College, Little John’s Derby Jewelry, LG&E, Republic Bank and ZirMed, Inc.
