Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - A man waiting for a bus died at the stop Wednesday after a crash sent a vehicle right into him.
It happened on 23rd and Hill streets in West Louisville around 10:30am.
Neighbors say there have been problems at the intersection for years.
"This is a busy, busy, busy street," said Luther Blakely, who has lived on the street for more than 40 years. Today, a man was killed while waiting for a TARC bus. According to police, a van ran a stop sign at the corner of West Hill and South 23rd. It struck a Dodge Intrepid, which hit a man waiting on the bus... knocking him more than 50 feet. "His body was just twisted up. It was real sad," said neighbor Angela Johnson.
Two passengers in the Intrepid were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. Neighbors say it's one of many accidents they've seen at that intersection.
"You see cars going through here doing 40, 50, 60 miles an hour, because there's not a stoplight at the corner," said Blakely.
Stop signs control North-South traffic. Neighbors say motorists often run those.
Kentucky State Police statistics show there have been 13 collisions at the intersection resulting in 26 injuries since 2006.
Neighbors petitioned the city to install a traffic light, but a study showed that the intersection didn't meet the proper criteria for one.
Now, neighbors hope officials will take another look at the issue.
TARC will evaluate the bus stop to see if any safety issues exist there.
