LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Some parents know exactly what they’re looking for when it comes to their children’s safety at school.
One parent told us, “I think there should be police officers on staff at all times, I think the doors should be locked at all times, along with bulletproof glass."
Of the 23 executive orders President Obama signed on Wednesday, three had to do with school safety. First, train first responders, law enforcement, and school officials for active shooter situations. Number two, the president wants to give incentives for schools to hire resource officers. Number three, come up with emergency response plans for schools, places of worship, and colleges.
A document from the White House explains the president’s intention with the orders. He aims to create not only physically safer schools, but to provide counselors and psychologists to create more nurturing environments to prevent school violence.
But, some parents we talked to say in the end, it comes down to parents keeping their kids on the right path.
David King said, "I'm an old school...to me, discipline is more important than a psychiatrist, that's just the way I was brought up, I had a disciplinarian family and I was brought up that way and that's how I raised my son, and I think if more parents took a little bit more responsibility schools wouldn't have to."
