CRESTWOOD, Ky. (WHAS11) – It’s some of the most coveted bourbon there is – Pappy Van Winkle.
It’s so wanted that someone made off with nearly 200 bottles of the 20-year-old bourbon worth more than $26,000.
The family of the distillery put on a special party to mark the formal launch of a new clothing line in hopes of giving people a chance to share in their celebrated brand.
“There’s been a need for merchandise for many years for the Pappy fans out there,” owner Carrie Van Winkle-Greener said.
Van Winkle-Greener and her two sisters started the brand selling hats and t-shirts for about $28 dollars online. They admit that it’s been tougher to start than they thought.
“Trying to get the right fit, and the right color and the right feel for everybody you know,” she said.
The family found manufacturers in the U.S. to produce the shirts and hopes it can give people who cannot get their hands on a bottle to at least be able to say they have one sought after Pappy Van Winkle labels.
“This is a good way to get something to our fans if they can’t get a bottle this year or the next unfortunately. At least they can get something else that represents something that they love so much,” Van Winkle-Greener said.
This week, a massive theft came to light. Someone had been pilfering bottles of the well-aged bourbon for months, $26,000 worth, a huge dent in an already rare stash.
“Unfortunately it's really an unfortunate situation, the extra hype really does nothing for our brand in a way just because we don't really need any more attention then we already have for our lack of bourbon," Van Winkle-Greener said.
Authorities are still searching for the persons responsible for the missing bourbon. Anyone with information is asked to call the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department at (502)-875-8740.
