JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (WHAS11) --  Police in Jeffersonville said a Jeffersonville High School teacher was assaulted by a student on Thursday.

The school's resource officer, Brian Cleveland, who is also a Jeffersonville police officer said Howard Sparkman, a science teacher, was attempting to escort the student out of the classroom for another behavior issue when the student allegedly hit Sparkman in the face face with his fists, bloodying the teacher.

The student,  who is under the age of 18,  was removed from the school and is charged with battery and injury to a school employee.

Sparkman refused treatment, but said he will be returning to class on Friday.

A Greater Clark County spokeswoman told us they could not comment on disciplinary action taken against the student.
