OWENSBORO, Ky. (AP) -- Two high school juniors from Owensboro have been selected to pitch a patent project for a University of Kentucky contest.

Blake Knott and Dalton Nonweiler told the Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer the idea for Eaasy Squeezy Earphones was born of frustration.

Knott said he has tried all kinds of headphones, but they all fall out and let in background noise. And they break. The duo wants to make something that lasts.

Preliminary efforts included gluing old earbuds to earplugs, but the students are working on something better with the help of their engineering teachers.

The contest takes place on March 14 in Lexington. It is part of the Project Lead the Way/Kentucky initiative, which encourages high school students to pursue the biomedical sciences and engineering.
