LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Police are investigating after an officer involved shooting in Louisville's PRP area at Terry Road and Greenwood Road, outside of a McDonald's.
Around 6 p.m., at the corner of Greenwood and Terry, chaos erupted. Detectives were investigating a silver Cadillac. In it, a person they said they believe is a suspect in 21-year-old Paul Barber's murder. They walked up to the car and that's when gunshots erupted.
"Our officers did spot the suspect in the McDonald's parking lot inside of a car with two other occupants. The detectives attempted to approach the car when the suspect fired a gun at the officers," Sergeant Robert Biven, with the LMPD, said.
Officers returned fire, shooting the suspect and a female passenger. They both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Fortunately, the suspect's bullets missed the officers.
"The police officers are OK. Charges are forthcoming," Biven said.
The LMPD have released the names of the officers involved in Thursday’s shooting. Their names are Detective Bradley Beckham and Detective Kevin Speaks. Both have been employed with LMPD since November 2008 and their most recent assignment was with the VIPER Unit.
Sky11 was over the scene.
The intersection was shut down immediately after the incident. Just up the road more than 200 gathered at Sun Valley Park to remember Barber. His mother, Elizabeth, received the news that another suspect is in custody.
"I'm stoked. It's come along a lot faster than I thought and I think PJ's got something to do with that," Elizabeth Barber said.
She's hopeful that a third suspect will soon be behind bars too.
"People are talking. More information is coming out. We are gonna get them," Elizabeth Barber said.
They met at the park where PJ used to play ball. They released blue balloons into the sky. Elizabeth said right now she can smile because of the support.
"As you can see he was loved. This is an amazing night for us right now," Elizabeth Barber said.
