(WHAS11) Protesters in Northern Kentucky are trying to stop the construction of a mosque. Flyers are circulating in Florence, Ky. asking that city government officials intervene.
Currently, Muslims in the area worship out of a rental space and would like a real place of worship. Muslims said the opposition to the mosque is fueled by the debate over placing a mosque at Ground Zero.
Karen Dabdoub, Council on American Islamic Relations, said “I think a lot is driven by the New York issue and if it wasn’t for that and for election season, perhaps a lot of this wouldn’t have happened.”
Construction is scheduled to begin on the Florence mosque in April, 2011.
