Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - The Forecastle Festival 2010 will move from the Belvedere to Louisville's Waterfront Park for the first time to accommodate its growing popularity. The Flaming Lips, Widespread Panic and Spoon are some of the bands that will headline this year's festival.
The festival happens July 9th-11th. The initial lineup of bands includes The Drive-By Truckers, Bassnectar, Minus the Bear, The New Deal, Lucero, a reunion by Cap 'n Jazz, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Sara Watkins (of Nickel Creek), Dar Williams, EOTO, Break Science, Mimosa, Mucca Pazza, Company of Thieves, Savoy, BoomBox, Two Fresh and Morning Teleportation. More than 60 more performers will be announced in April, including additional headliners.
"It's music, art and activism," says Forecastle Festival founder J.K. McKnight. "We look at it as a place where people can be both educated and entertained."
McKnight says it was the first festival in the country to market activism, particularly when it comes to the environment -- something that's grown in popularity over the years.
"I remember when it was hard for us to find sponsors to do something like that," he says. "Now we've really proved, yes it can be done."
McKnight began the music festival nine years ago in Tyler Park with about 150 people attending. Since then, it has grown out of several venues including Cherokee Park and the Mellwood Center. Last year's crowd at the Belvedere topped 23,000 people and organizers expect this year's crowd at Waterfront Park to top that.
"It's incredible," says McKnight. "To go back and look at that first year, the initial lineup and how far we've come... it's incredible."
