LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) – A New Albany veteran is receiving honors for his service during World War II.
Family and friends of Rubin Sher were present Monday as Congressman Baron Hill presented him with the Good Conduct medal, the Presidential Unit Citation for the European/African/Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 1 Silver Service Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button for World War II
Sher served as a chaplain's assistant in Europe under General George Patton's army. He arrived three days after the Normandy invasion in 1944.
Sher administered aid to the wounded and recovered bodies under enemy fire.
Sher’s family says that memories like those impacted Sher after he returned home.
“He came back with a lot of sadness,” said his son, Martin Sher. “What he saw in action, and now to be able to share it at this point in his life is a very special moment.”
After the war, Rubin Sher came back to New Albany and served Kentuckiana as a respected music educator, violinist and conductor.
