LOUISVILLE (WHAS11) –   Jefferson County is once again putting pressure on delinquent parents by naming them publicly.

This Sunday, the Jefferson County Attorney's office will publish the names of those who owe back child support. The names will be listed in both in the Courier-Journal newspaper and online.

WHAS11 's Claudia Coffey has information on how many names we can expect to see.

She says the list has 1,253 names, and an astounding $45 million in back child support is owed.
Mike O'Connell is the Jefferson County attorney.  He spoke about the child support list to WHAS11 News on Wednesday.

"This is a strategy that we are using.  It has been successful for a lot of custodial parents. This is literally found money that they thought they would never collect."

The County Attorney’s office will put the names out on both the web and in a newspaper insert.

This is the fifth year the office has used this particular public approach to chasing dead-beat dads and moms out of hiding and forcing them to pay up.

O'Connell says they are doing it again because this type of early invention is proven to work.

"It’s been demonstrated that if you can find a parent that is obligated to pay, and get that person paying at an early point during that obligation, the chances of achieving support collection for a child is better," he said.

O'Connell says the worst offenders are listed on the web.  Many have never paid a dime.

8 percent of all those listed are women who owe child support.

O’Connell says typically following this publication the phones ring off the hook on Monday as people call with information about those listed.

If you recognize one of the listed names, you can call the County Attorney's office at (502) 574-0821 or go to their website:
