LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The investigation into the shooting death of a 21-year-old Hikes Point man Tuesday is continuing into the weekend.

Police said 21-year-old Rontrel Leak was shot just after midnight at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of Orchard Manor Circle.  His mother and younger brother are speaking out to WHAS11.  They think who ever pulled the trigger knew Leak and they don't want the public to forget a young man's life has been lost

"He's not going to be a statistic. He's not going to be just the latest victim in a homicide in Louisville. It's not going to happen like that," says Samantha Hayes."

Leaks mother, Samantha Hayes, was still in shock Friday and told WHAS11 she is anxious for the person responsible, who she believes knew her son prior to the shooting, to be arrested.

"Would he have harmed anyone in that house? No, he looked out for them. And they betrayed him," says Hayes.

Leak was visiting friends at the apartment building when he shot; his body found just outside. Hayes says her son was a good person, he graduated from Seneca, volunteered at a safe place program and mentored children whose parents were in prison.  He also recently obtained a job.

"He was the most respectful young man you would ever come across," says Hayes.

Leak's younger brother, Brandon Hayes, is stepping up and providing comfort to his mother and family.

"Just helping my whole family out. It's what my brother would have done," says Brandon Hayes.

Samantha Hayes says she always had concerns about the people her son hung out with at that apartment. She says tensions are running high between his friends and her family, but she won't stop until her son's killer is behind bars.

"I'm not disappearing until I know," says Hayes.

Police said they are following up on a number of leads. At this point no arrests have been made.
