LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- It’s a case that stunned this community. A 5-year-old boy out on his scooter, during a walk with his family, was killed by a driver suspected of being high on heroin.
That driver then took off after hitting the 5-year-old. He was a little boy who loved to dress up and be with his family until an evening walk turned this family’s world upside down.
More details were uncovered about this tragedy in Pleasure Ridge Park from newly released court documents.
“A tan van kind of swerved a little bit on the road…and hit my youngest son and my son went under the van,” Daniel Clem said.
Daniel Clem’s 5-year-old son, Benjamin Clem was killed on Grandel Boulevard in PRP in April.
Police said Edward Pearce was behind the wheel and high on drugs.
Video of Pearce at Metro Corrections shows him slumped over in his seat. He does this several times as police try to keep him alert.
When police questioned him about the crash he has no clue what's happened.
OFFICER: Tell me about the collision, tell me what happened.
PEARCE: What collision? There was no collision.
OFFICER: You are saying there was no collision this evening?
PEARCE: No, sir.
OFFICER: Alright have you used any drugs this evening?
PEARCE: Um, no sir.
Pearce is charged with murder. His criminal history shows he was found guilty of careless driving in 2007 and 2013.
