(WHAS11)—Crews have stopped the sliding of the Milton-Madison Bridge onto its permanent pier because of the strong winds.
The process will likely resume over the weekend, when the winds are expected to die down.
Crews were able to move the bridge 16 feet on Wednesday, with another 39 feet remaining until the bridge is in place.
Restraints are being re-installed to secure the truss and other steps are being taken to limit the impact the wind will have when they slide resumes.
The Coast Guard will reopen the river allowing the water taxi and the emergency ferry to resume service.
