Passenger killed in single-car crash on National Turnpike ID'd

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The coroner has identified the woman killed in an overnight accident.

The accident happened late Tuesday night when police said a man in his 30's was speeding near the 9900 block of National Turnpike when he crashed into a culvert.

A 60-year-old woman, who was identified as Brenda Jackson, was a passenger in the man's car; Jackson died at the scene The driver was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said they don't know what caused the car to leave the roadway, but skid marks are visible for more than 200 feet.

"When it's late like this and dark, we recommend that individuals follow the speed limit and make sure they're aware of where they're going. It's just unknown at this point, why the extreme speed and why they ran off the road," LMPD public information officer Carey Klain said.

Police are looking to speak with the driver of the car.
