LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has a challenge for Louisville residents to step up and help the city break its own record for public service.

"One of our goals since day one is to take what we have in this city already, which is great hospitality and caring, and ignite a brushfire of compassion that makes Louisville one of the most caring and compassionate cities in the world. And I think we're well on our way," Mayor Greg Fischer said.

The second “Give A Day” volunteer week is April 13 through 21 and residents are being urged to volunteer their time, give blood, and donate a canned good or even just help a neighbor.

Last year's week produced more than 90,000 volunteers and acts of compassion; the goal this year is $100,000.

On Wednesday, April 3, WHAS11 will take part in the mayor's challenge. We're having our own “Give A Day” telethon during our newscasts from 5 to 7 p.m. It’ll be your chance to call in to volunteer your time.
