LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS 11) -- Police are investigating the city's latest homicide after 24-year-old Brandon Shackelford was shot to death inside a car at Cox's Park off River Road early Monday morning.
Police said an officer working a routine patrol found a Shackelford around 2:30 a.m.
Annie Perry, Shackelford's grandmother, talked with WHAS11 and said her grandson was taken away from her.
“He was my only grandson,” Perry said. “He is a sweet person; God couldn't send a better person.”
His family waited for answers from the side of River Road as police investigated at the scene.
Perry said her nephew was also in the car at the time of the shooting, but he was able to escape when the shooter's gun jammed. She said the killer is someone both Sheckelford and her nephew knew very well.
“He’s emotionally upset and he is very angry,” Perry said. “Right now, I doubt he would talk because he would explode like a bomb.”
Police said a prior altercation led to the shooting, but they would not elaborate on any details. Homicide detectives were on the scene for several hours until the sun rose as they collected evidence to bring Shackelford's killer to justice. The Metro police dive team also searched in the Ohio River near where Sheckelford’s body was found.
“I know the person did this and know you’re scared but I forgive you,” Perry said. “I do, because what if the shoe was on the other side.”
Police said they have very good leads they are following, but would not release any details on a person or persons of interest.
At this time police do not have any suspects. If you have any information about this crime call the anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
