LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Anthony Politi will spend the rest of his life in prison - he was sentenced Thursday after he was convicted of raping and killing a mother of seven children.
"For the offense of aggravated murder a capital offense I will sentence you to life without the possibility of parole," Judge James Shake said.
Politi, a persistent felon, sat motionless and appeared devoid of any remorse during sentencing.
Edwina Adkins was the victim of a brutal rape and murder in January 2012 and her family traveled from Virginia so they could take the stand in the courtroom, speaking powerful words.
"While it pains my heart beyond whatever you could ever imagine. I know God allowed my sister's life to help other women who could be your next victim," the victim's sister, Angela Yancy, said.
"You deprived seven children Cyrstal, Zakkia, Laurie, Brittney, Erika, Ayana and Nicholas of their mother forever," Gloria Lewis, Adkins' mother, said.
Her family said Adkins moved to Louisville to start a new life and receive treatment for drugs. Prosecutors said she somehow fell into a sadistic man's hands. Killed by Politi at the 1600 block of West Kentucky Street.
"This individual will never ever walk among our community," the prosecutor said.
Politi previously pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, which is a capital offense. The victim's family said they can finally begin healing though they feel a terrible void.
"Whenever she entered the room there was joy. She just loved everybody. We miss that because there's a silence there that we can not overcome," Lewis said.
Adkins' family said they will spend Memorial Day placing flowers at her grave in Virginia and praying at her grave.
