LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Jamie Lykins, 24, made his first court appearance on Wednesday, Sept. 11 after he was arrested on Monday and was charged with the neglect of a dependent and battery causing death.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police said Jamie Lykins, 24, was arrested at 3:15 Monday.  Lykins was the live-in boyfriend of the 8-month-old baby's mother.

Police said he was arrested after detectives gained information from interviews, the scene investigation and the autopsy completed on the 8-month-old victim, identified by police as Leelan Crain.

That 8-month-old child was found unresponsive by his mother Saturday night while Leelan was taking a nap.  The child was rushed to Kosair Children's Hospital, where he died a short time later.

The official and final determination of the cause of death to Leelan Crain will not be made until the autopsy results are complete which typically takes up to six weeks, police noted.

Jamie Lykins was arrested without incident at a convenience store on State Road #56 in Salem and incarcerated in the Washington County Jail in Salem. He was charged with neglect of a dependent, a felony, and battery causing death, a felony.
