PADUCAH, Ky. — Paducah Public Schools has terminated the contract of an assistant principal who was acquitted last year in a 1998 dormitory fire at Murray State University that killed one student and injured several others.

Assistant Superintendent Donald Shively told The Paducah Sun (http://bit.ly/12fIlBG) that paperwork ending the contract of Jerry Walker was signed June 3 and school board members approved the move this week. Walker was assistant principal at Paducah Middle School.

Shively said he could not discuss the reasons for the action, but said Walker has appealed the decision.

Walker was acquitted by a jury last July of manslaughter, arson and other charges related to the blaze. He later pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence charges related to letters written after the fire that attempted to place blame for it.
