LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A group of Louisville residents has been in contact with people in Ukraine since the violence in Kiev erupted.
The Hopeful Heart Foundation provides food, clothing and medication to hundreds of orphans in Simferopol, the capital of Crimea.
The group also operates transitional living homes for orphans who would otherwise be homeless.
Bob Drane is one of several Louisville parents who helped start the foundation after they adopted children from rundown, antiquated orphanages in Ukraine.
In the past 12 years, Hopeful Hearts has spent more than $100,000 caring for orphans there.
They have a five person staff in Ukraine.
Drane said emails from friends and agency employees in Ukraine say they are fearful part of the country could be overtaken very soon.
