LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- The MSD approved a rate increase on Monday morning which means utility customers will be paying more on their monthly bills.
In a unanimous decision, the Metro Sewer District agreed to raise rates by 6.5%. Customers can expect to see their monthly bills go up by about $2.73 each month.
The increase has been driven by an $850 million federal court agreement to renovate the sewer system to reduce sewage spills.
MSD officials say the money will go for a number of projects including green initiatives, replacing and rehabilitation the current underground sewer system and building retention facilities to store water during heavy rains.
The rate hike will go into effect August 1.
