LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Louisville consumes $3 billion worth of food every year and Mayor Greg Fischer says the city is on its way to making sure more of that money stays here at home.
Fischer addressed the state of the local food economy Saturday at the free public library on York Street.
The mayor says the city won a grant for its local farm to table program and more restaurants are opening up that use local food.
Fischer says it is not only healthier, but the program also encourages people to grow their own food.
“Kids can see this is the person that grows the food. They then talk about what a farm economy is like, what farm life is like. Putting a face on food is important. What that does [is] it intrigues kids,” says Fischer.
